The Results From Speed Dating Are InTHE MATCH GAME
It took over a month to find out if I had any matches from my speed dating adventure. During that time I waited relatively patiently knowing that the people from Grey Bears, who sponsored the event, had their work cut out for them. They had to calculate the preferences of more than 50 seniors over the age of 70 who bravely ventured out into the world of speed dating. I actually had some matches - and I HAD AN ACTUAL DATE! Evidently my short, round stature and head tremor did not put him off. This was not a speed dating date where you only have five minutes to try and figure out who the other person is. This was a real date. Meeting at a restaurant and consuming food were involved. FANTASIES AND FEARS Before the date my mind was swimming. I found myself reliving an experience I had many eons ago that involved putting a singles ad in the local newspaper. I remember getting caught up in mental fantasies about who the people were before I even met them. The old fear of rejection reared it’s ugly head as well. Then I remembered what my friends told me when I talked about my fears of dating. They assured me that I am an interesting and appealing person. Yes, I do have a lot of little old lady with cats characteristics, but that does not define me any more than the fact that I haven’t had a real date in a very long time. That’s OK. I have been doing other things. I have been enjoying the people in my life who I love and who love me. I have also been exploring the world through art, writing, and travel. In fact, I have been on a journey of discovery, learning to embrace and savor life. WHAT I LEARNED Having this experience made me revisit what I was looking for by dipping my toes into the relationship waters again. I am hoping to meet interesting people who have been on their own journey. They have probably made mistakes like I have. They may also have some of the same fears of being out in the dating world. Even if they don’t feel the same way I do, that’s OK too because I am hoping to find someone different than me who can bring something new into my life. It also inspired me to put down in words the things I value most in a relationship and the kind of person I am most comfortable with. I am looking for someone who mirrors the qualities I love about my family and friends: kindness, thoughtfulness, honesty, and dependability. The speed dating experience made me realize that I am attracted to people who have a creative interest and that I am not searching for the love of my life in the way I was when I was younger. I really just want someone of the male persuasion to do simple things with, like go to a movie. SLOW DATING My date seemed like an interesting person, and a gentleman of the old order. I like that. We agreed that friendship was what we were looking for and that it would be nice to get together again. If we actually have another date, I plan to take it slow.
